Making Digital Identity Visible
A Generative Reflection of Identity
How can an abstract concept such as digital identity be translated into something people can immediately experience? For re:publica 2025, the interactive installation “Identity Mirror” was created to transform the idea of digital identity into a visual and poetic experience. The installation converts the live camera image of visitors into a generative mosaic of animated graphic elements. Each movement becomes part of a continuous visual transformation in which identity appears not as a static object but as a dynamic interplay of data, context and perception. The installation was developed for the EUDI Wallet project of SPRIND in collaboration with MEIRÉ and the Polish designer and digital artist Bartosz Szymkiewicz.
From Infrastructure to Experience
The EUDI Wallet is a central component of Europe’s emerging digital identity infrastructure. It will allow citizens to store digital credentials securely on their smartphones and share them selectively under their own control. At re:publica, the goal was therefore not to explain this complex technological initiative through interfaces, but to make its underlying idea tangible through a visual and interactive experience. The project builds on an experimental generative system by Bartosz Szymkiewicz that transforms webcam imagery into animated pixel structures and was further developed into a visual language tailored to the themes of digital identity and European infrastructure. The installation also integrates project-specific graphic elements and short textual statements addressing ideas such as digital sovereignty and identity within digital ecosystems.
